The Britannia Inn
It is believed that the inn dates back to 1462 AD. During that time, the building was a group of cottages used as accommodation by the monks from the nearby Valle Crucis Abbey. In fact, records show that the rear of the inn was used as a burial ground where the souls of departed brethren were laid to rest.
However, in 1985, a survey of the original oak beams in the roof indicated that the Inn dates back to the 13th Century, which would mean that the original building was constructed shortly after the Abbey itself, which was constructed in 1201 AD.
According to the custom at the time, the monks brewed ale and baked bread, which they sold to weary travelers. This continued even after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. To this day, providing sustenance remains part of the warm tradition of the Inn.
It is thought that the first ale brewed on the premises would have been around the 13th or 14th Century. The original ales would have been brewed with the spring water still gently cascading down the waterfall at the side of the inn today. The bread was probably made in the area that now serves as the public bar area.
Paranormal investigations claim that the Inn is home to a number of spirits - not found in bottles! Big Bill and some of the brothers still hang around the Inn, where they spent many a happy day. More recently it was a coaching stop and some of the equipment used then is still to be seen hanging on the wall over the fireplace.
The Britannia Inn is considered by many to be amongst the top ten establishments in the country. It has won numerous awards for it's outstanding food and glorious gardens.
This family run concern is featured in many English Pub Guides and is also mentioned in the Los Angeles Times in America, as well as being featured on German and Belgian Hospitality programmes.
Presently owned by Ann, Tony, Andrew and Claire, the Inn continues to keep up the high standards it is famous for. The Inn attracts Worldwide visitors who love to stay in its Olde Worlde rooms.
