Back to HOME MENU
The Britannia Inn, situated at the foot of the
Horseshoe Pass, was built in the 14th Century by the Monks of
the nearby Valle Crucis Abbey. Having an extensive view of the Vale of
Llangollen below, well known throughout the area for it's good food,
accommodation and hospitality, the Britannia Inn is a favourite for locals and
holiday makers alike, offering high quality Bed and Breakfast (B&B)
accommodation and also half board accommodation, in a relaxed
country setting.
As well as featuring in food and Hotel guides, the Britannia Inn Hotel has also featured in publications abroad - once favoured in the L.A. Times as the place to stop in North Wales! Another attraction for visitors to the Hotel are our award winning flower displays - the Britannia Inn Hotel is credited with no less than 15 Wales in Bloom awards - the colours change with the seasons and always look spectacular. Accommodation at the Britannia won't disappoint, the quaint "cottage style" guest rooms are friendly and welcoming, and four of the Guest rooms have lovely panoramic views of the valley below.

In the winter, sit indoors with a hot drink, enjoy the sparkling snowy view, and consider a short trip up the nearby mountain. Whether to enjoy tobogganing with the kids or to take in the spectacular views at the top of the Horseshoe pass, its a lovely place to visit. Alternatively, wander down the mountain and explore picturesque Llangollen Town, centred around it's bridge crossing over the Dee River. Or just go off on an exciting adventure on one of the many local tourist activities - there is so much to do from your base at the Britannia inn, you will be absolutely spoilt for choice. And even if the weather is poor, you can relax in your guest room with a good book, or your Television, and just feel your blood pressure reducing by the minute - whilst eagerly looking forward to your next tasty meal down in the elegant dining room or the comfortable Lounge Bar. NEARBY PLACES OF INTEREST & THINGS TO DO
Britannia Inn Hotel,
Llangollen: High Quality accommodation, Bed and Breakfast (B&B)
Llangollen is one of the few towns in Britain to offer 3 modes of transport in and out of the town. Firstly by road, secondly by steam railway, and thirdly by canal. Llangollen steam railway is open all year around and is very popular, particularly "Thomas the Tank Engine and friends".
There are so many historical sites of interest and tourist attractions nearby it would be impossible to mention them all. The many historic buildings in the area includeChirk Castle, Valle Crucis Abbey (only 10 minutes walk from the Britannia Inn), Errdig Hall and Plas Newydd - to name but a few. The Inn is also in an ideal position for those wishing to explore further into Wales, being only 35 minutes from the Coastal towns of Colwyn Bay and Conway, and 40 minutes from the Snowdonia Mountain range and Llandudno. Horseshoe Pass is on the Inn's doorstep, picturesque Llangollen Town only a few minutes drive away, and the River Dee, Clwyd Theatr Cymru, and the historic walled city of Chester are all within easy striking distance.
Nearby activities:
At the right time of year, Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a must. But book early as accommodation is scarce during the Eisteddfod!
Events occur all year round at the Arena.
Valle Crucis Abbey is nearby, within easy walking distance...
And Castle Dinas Bran, also steeped in
history,
is straight up a nearby hill - well, not straight really,
unless you are incredibly fit!
For those wishing to travel a little further afield, Caernarfon castle - probably the most famous of all castles and the place of Prince Charles investiture - is just over an hour away.
We are also close to many centres for shopping, such as Wrexham, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and the historic walled city of Chester. Whatever you decide to do you can enjoy your day out safe in the knowledge that a warm and friendly greeting awaits you when you return to the Britannia Inn.
Llangollen Canal:
A canal boating holiday - canal boats are known as "Narrowboats" - is a great way to explore the inland waterways of the UK. One of the highlights of the Llangollen Canal is the Froncysilite Aqueduct - but beware if you are nervous of heights!
Nearby Froncysilite Aqueduct....
A nerve tingling single lane crossing of the aqueduct!
It's scary even for walkers, who cross on the path
next to the rail.
But what about the narrow boat driver - can you see why he
has chosen to stand on port (left) side of the boat!!!
Horseshoe Falls on the River Dee is the Source of the Llangollen Canal. Originally designed and constructed in 1808 by civil engineer Thomas Telford, the distinctive weir creates a pool of water that feeds into the Llangollen Canal and was . Only shallow draft boats can navigate up to the Horseshoe Falls so you may need to walk up, or take a trip on one of the shallow draft horse drawn day boats.
The Britannia Inn is about a mile from the nearest point on the canal, up the valley from the Horseshoe Falls - about two miles from the Llangollen Wharf in town.
Area map including the Horseshoe Falls
It's a really lovely walking area and the warm welcome and top notch meal you will find awaiting you at the Britannia Inn will make you really pleased you made the trip. Walk up the valley and stop in the Brit for a drink and a good lunch, or come up for a great evening meal - note you will be best with a taxi if it's after dark - the walk up the road is not recommended in the dark as there is no sidewalk... and you might not find your way back over the mountain easily - particularly after a few pints!
Walks near the Britannia Inn Hotel:
We have compiled a list of walks in the area including information onall the local historical sites and beauty spots on the way. Walks range from a short 1 mile hike to full day walks. A list of all the most popular walks are available at reception upon your arrival. A number of the walks start (or finish) at the Britannia Inn, so you have no need to drive anywhere to begin!
Nearby Eglwyseg mountains and Offa's Dyke
Other nearby activities:
Radio Control Model Plane flying, Fishing and Golf are also popular local interests and some can be enjoyed by our visitors.
More challenging activities:
Gliding, Hang Gliding,Para-ascending, Go-Karting, Horse Riding, Mountain Biking and more are all available within the local area, most are only a short drive from the Britannia Inn.
For the adventurous, Llangollen based White Water Active provides exciting activities including White Water Rafting, Canoeing and Kayaking, Gorge Walking, Climbing and Abseiling, Quad Biking, Laser Clay shooting, Archery and Paint Balling.
Local events worth a visit:
Llangollen annual Balloon Festival and the Llangollen Motorcycle show are very popular...
Are these guys crazy?!
I hope there is somewhere SOFT to land!!!

Britannia Inn Hotel,
Llangollen: High Quality accommodation, Bed and Breakfast (B&B)
The Britannia Inn Llangollen is steeped in Centuries of history and has close links with the nearby Valle Crucis Abbey. It is thought that originally the Britannia Inn was one cottage built specifically for the monks, using some materials that could have been from the Abbey itself - have a look at the wooden beam over the fireplace!
The Monks are said to still inhabit the Brit... some people are certain they have caught glimpses of monk-like shadows in several of the main public rooms, and others swear they have actually seen them!! Several sances have been held at the Brit - with startling results!
A few of our haunted activities have generated interest in the local press. The article below is from The Leader newspaper, written by The North Wales Paranormal Group...
